Cast Iron Grill

Cast Iron Grill For a Perfect Barbecue Party!

Almost everybody has thrown a barbecue party or has been at one. With the popularity of barbecues, more and more people are buying barbecue grills for their home. There many kinds of grills available and even more kinds of grates to be put over them.

The most important part of a grill is the cooking surface. The material used here should be strong. It need not be Teflon but it should also not allow the food to stick to it. The cooking surface should allow for good transfer of heat.

Some kinds of material used for the cooking surface are cast iron, stainless steel, plain steel, porcelain coated steel or porcelain coated cast iron. Of these, the cast iron grill is considered the best for a grate. A heavy cast iron grate is even better. One of the reasons is that a cast iron grill heats up fast and holds the heat for a long time. Food cooked on such a grate takes shorter time to cook. A cast iron grate gives the food some nice grill marks.

Plain steel and stainless steel grates are chipped soon and lose their non-stick ability, though a stainless steel grate does last longer than a plain steel grate. If the porcelain used to coat the cast iron or stainless steel is of inferior quality that too can chip quite fast. With the porcelain coating, you have to be careful to keep it away from hard metals and tools.

Nevertheless, a bare cast iron grill does require a lot of maintenance. Its surface must be regularly oiled and it must be kept clean at all times. Grease accumulates on the surface of the grate while grilling. This needs to be frequently cleaned, you must check the grill from time to time for any signs of rusting. The high heat during grilling can cause the grease to vaporize and burn away. However, you may still need to oil the grate properly.

A cast iron grill that is good and heavy will last you ages if you take good care of it. However, if you require a grill that involves lower maintenance, then you should opt for a porcelain coated cast iron grate. A porcelain coated cast iron grate combines the heat characteristics of the cast iron while at the same time providing a rust resistant surface. Remember, though to get a good grill cleaning brush that does not chip the porcelain coating.
